about

There's a long story behind this one. I would never have chosen to record the jingoistic Minstrel Boy, but I was asked to contribute a recording of it for a remixing competition on a music website, where anyone could download it and rework it. Among the many unlistenable extreme mashups was this clever and sophisticated effort by Dick Langford which really stood out. It was as a result of this that I started working with him, but this track is entirely his own work without any creative input from me. The male voice you hear on this is actually my main vocal put through a pitch shifter. It still freaks me out a little to hear that. Dick's guitar work on this is electrifying.

lyrics

The minstrel boy to the war is gone
In the ranks of death you'll find him
His father's sword he hath girded on
And his wild harp slung behind him
Land of Song! cried the warrior bard
Tho' all the world betrays thee
One sword, at least, thy rights shall guard
One faithful harp shall praise thee

The minstrel fell, but the foeman's chain
Could not bring that proud soul under
The harp he lov'd ne'er spoke again
For he tore its chords asunder
And said No chains shall sully thee
Thou soul of love and brav'ry
Thy songs were made for the pure and free
They shall never sound in slavery
